Leaders are natural, leaders inspire and leaders are learners.
Thoughts for a new leader
Being a manager doesn’t make you a leader. Likewise getting a promotion doesn’t always mean you will lead with success.
Leadership is instinctual but needs constant renewal and development.
Leading people is a privilege that takes hard work to maintain. Never sell yourself short on your ability to serve.
Putting yourself out there can be isolating and lonely. Be honest with your vision, bring others along for the ride.
Why Learn
In our ever changing world, technological advances and generational shifts demand skill replenishment. Leadership is a skill, feed it with knowledge and continually grow.
“Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.”
John F. Kennedy, 35th President of the United States
Tools
Audible is a great tool for leadership growth. Time is precious. As William Farmer from Dale Carnegie Australia would say “time is spelt L.I.F.E”. Listening to books while you are on the move is a great way to learn and to maximise your valuable time. Make the most of your L.I.F.E.
Many great companies over the last year have organised some fantastic virtual conferences or seminars. The Growth Faculty has been one of my favorites. With the highlights being performances of Jim Collins (twice) and Patrick Lencioni.
Now that we can start to physically interact again post COVID, attending seminars and courses can recharge your leadership senses. I’m still a little old school so talking to people that aren’t on a screen is, well, real.
Conclusion
Keeping yourself fresh and inspired can sometimes be hard. Especially when daily tasks and more pressing issues control your time. It is important to take a step back and renew. Learn to lead, teach what you learn, lead what you teach.
